Lila, born Cari grew up in a small lake community in New Jersey and attended Blair Academy on soccer scholarship. Her parents divorced when she was young, and her and her younger brother were raised by their hardworking mother, holding down three jobs to provide for the family. An honor's student and 3 sport athlete, with many friends, life was Full and supported.
Cari pursued a bachelors in Psychology from Middlebury College '01 in Vermont. and spent a year abroad in Australia at The University of Queensland, where she first experienced a profound awakening in Joy during an ocean surf with dolphins. Bouts of depression and anxiety became more often, yet she chose not to medicate. In 2001, Governed by a love affair with nature and outdoor adventure sports, Cari headed west after college to Telluride, Colorado, where she lived in a tipi, and interned at Tomten Farm, an organic permaculture farm at 9,000 feet! After this off-the-grid experience, where the food waste was composted to make soil, and life was in harmony with the natural cycles, Cari felt that this kind of back to nature living made too much sense and desired to pursue more education. First though, she headed to Idllywild, California to work for The Desert Sun Science Center teaching outdoor adventure and space science at AstroCamp.
In 2002-4 Lila pursued Masters coursework in ecological design and sustainable architecture at the San Francisco Institute of Architecture. A visionary course with a focus on creative design work, Cari became an intern for Eugene Tsui, an evolutionary architect. Upon finding discontent with indoor office environment work, she headed to Lake Tahoe and became a house parent and sustainable living teacher at Squaw Valley Academy. She also coached freestyle snowboarding and waitressed. At this time she was inspired to purchase land in Costa Rica to build a sustainable retreat center.
In 2005, Cari pursued a permaculture design course called Earth Activist Training with Starhawk and also worked in Truckee at Spirit Design at an Interior Designer. In 2007, after pursuing leadership in matters of Truckee township, yet feeling too inexperienced to create change, Cari pursued a (Free) graduate education from Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden called Masters in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability. Upon completion, she felt her spirit needed nurturance, and received her Yoga Teaching Training from Nosara Yoga Institute in Costa Rica.
Lila has chosen to magnetize herself to the wisdom of innovative and vibrant communities, technologies, and mentors and has always pursued worktrade and alternative methods of exchange. From living on an off-the-grid permaculture farm in a tipi, city dwelling in industrial Oakland, to high-altitude mountain growing in Lake Tahoe. Many hats hang on her walls from teacher of yoga, astronomy, and sustainable living, to natural builder, landscape and interior designer, server, coach, performer, consultant, healer, and farmer. This path has led her to explore and understand many perspectives, belief systems, and states of consciousness, and has brought the gifts of visions, an active intuition, and the field of presencing and improvisational play. In the comfort of a sun soaked meditation practice at first light, Lila trusts in the unfolding of a world in balance, and is unyielding to programs that undermine people’s or the planet’s ability to meet its needs.
